29th May, 2019:
In what may be said to be the ‘Magulification effect,’ President Emerson
Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has openly admitted that since he assumed office, he has
been learning and emulating some leadership skills from President John Pombe
Magufuli of Tanzania.
It’s rare for a President of one country to share such a secret, but the
vividly happy Mnangagwa, said it all. Since taking power in 2015, President
Magufuli has been a mirror to many Africans and world leaders on his personal
vision and determination to transform his people and the ways of delivering the
transformation.
He is known as the bulldozer for his uncompromising focus on anti
corruption, wasteful of public funds and his vigour in implementing various
national projects using own taxpayers money.
It was no surprise that speaking during the State Banquet he prepared
for President Magufuli and his entourage at Harare State House, President
Mnangagwa revealed the secret that he has been emulating some of the Magufuli
tactics.
He specifically mentioned the techniques like what Magufuli employed fighting
corruption and the elimination of ghost workers from the government system who
were siphoning money from the national coffers.
According to the state press release issued here in
Harare, President Magufuli affirmed to his counterpart that Tanzania was ready
to cooperate more in different areas and making business for the betterment of
both countries and their citizens.
Mnangagwa is not the first African statesman to ask
for or reveal the need to emulate some great management efficiencies and
leadership skills from the Tanzanian strongman. Here we have a review of the
rest.
AU
Congratulates President Magufuli
At
the end of the 32nd Ordinary Session of the
Assembly held last year in Ethiopia, the African Heads of State and Government
of the African Union (AU) commended President Magufuli for his great
performance against corruption in the country. The discussants of the
report asked other countries to emulate.
The Transparency International has ranked Tanzania the second
country in East Africa after Rwanda in the war against corruption. The 2018
Corruption Perception Index (CPI) report released recently put Tanzania at an
average score of 36 points behind Rwanda which has scored 56 points.
Tanzania which is placed 99th out of 168 countries
in the 2018 Transparency International corruption index has improved because of
the efforts made by President Magufuli who has earned himself credibility and
acclaim, both in and outside Tanzania, for his fight against corruption.
Former Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Thabo Mbeki
Visiting Tanzania recently, the two statesmen
described Dr Magufuli as an exemplary leader in Africa, citing his efforts in
spearheading the country's economic development and safeguarding national
interests.
The retired Nigerian leader appreciated Dr Magufuli as
a good leader, with determination to bring positive changes to the country.
“He knows what he is doing especially on areas that
yields positive results in the economy, we shouldn't forget that neo-colonialism
is here and capitalists continue to exploit us, so any African leader who takes
initiatives to block the exploiters should be hailed,” said Dr Obasanjo. Mbeki
echoed similar opinion when he visited Magufuli in Dar es Salaam.
