The Southern Africa Development
Community (SADC); a regional bloc of 16 countries has formally endorsed the
hydro power dam in Tanzania that seeks to develop 2,115 megawatts of
electricity.
The dam that has been criticised by
some Western countries, will be Africa’s fourth largest in terms of power
outputs and will be completed in three years through Tanzania’s own taxpayer’s
money.
Speaking during the launch of the 4th
SADC Industrialization Week, the SADC Executive Secretary Dr. Stergomena Tax applauded
the initiative saying it will benefit other SADC countries that face acute
power shortage.
“We commend the efforts of President
Magufuli to increase supply of affordable energy through the 2,115 Rufiji Hydro
Project that will translate to lower costs of production and contribute, not
only in Tanzania but also the SADC region.”
Tanzania is hosting the 39th
SADC Summit that will be attended by other 15 member states. President Magufuli
will also assume the SADC chairmanship for a year from this August, 2019.
Speaking in the event, President
Magufuli affirmed his support for the region’s industrialization policy
insisting that Africa must focus on industrialization and intra-region trade.
