Ethiopian Airlines Signs Purchase Agreement for 10 Q400 Bombardier Aircraft

May 9, 2018 Toronto, Canada
Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced last month that it has concluded a firm order for 10 new Q400 Bombardier aircraft with Ethiopian Airlines. The order also includes purchase rights for five additional Q400 aircraft.

Based on the list price of the Q400 aircraft, the firm order is valued at approximately $332 million U.S. “The Bombardier turboprops continue to deliver unmatched performance to our operators, and we are proud that the flag carrier of Ethiopia is once again recognizing its tremendous value by increasing its fleet of Q400 aircraft,” said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.

“The market trend for high-performing and larger turboprops is intensifying, and this fifth reorder is a great example of the Q400 turboprop success story and the value it creates for clients around the world.”

Ethiopian Airlines is the largest operator of Q400 aircraft in Africa. The airline currently operates 22 Q400 turboprops based in Addis Ababa and through its partners at Asky in Lome and Malawian Airlines in Lilongwe, and is expected to take delivery of two more in 2018. With this order, Ethiopian will increase its fleet of Bombardier turboprops to up to 39 aircraft after exercising purchase rights.

“The Q400 turboprop is a great network builder. Its unmatched performance and outstanding economics has allowed us to better serve the domestic and regional demand in Ethiopia” said

Tewolde GebreMariam, Group Chief Executive Officer, Ethiopian Airlines, said: “As we continue to expand our network and build new strategic partnerships in the region, we are confident that the Q400 aircraft will help us develop underserved markets where challenging airports require distinct operational performance such as hot and high capabilities.

Bombardier’s strong support of their products and the fantastic performance of the aircraft is a very powerful tool for Ethiopian Airlines to continue developing our markets and supporting our partners. With our continued fleet modernization endeavor, we shall soon mark a notable milestone of reaching a 100 fleet capability, thus classifying Ethiopian as the first African carrier to own and operate the youngest and most modern fleet in the continent.

Ethiopian Airlines’ new 82-seat Q400 aircraft will support additional domestic capacity in Ethiopia, as well as their new partnership hubs in Mozambique, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea.

Facts The Economist Got Them Wrong on Magufuli

DAR ES SALAAM, East Africa:  By Dr. Hernan Louise Verhofstadt* “ A BIT like President Donald Trump, Tanzania’s president, John Magufuli, likes to fire employees on television. In November Mr. Magufuli used a live broadcast from a small town in the north of the country summarily to dismiss two officials,” this is an extract from a recent online article I came across from the newspaper that I admired when I was growing up in Europe back in 1990’s; the Economist . Before I venture into other serious issues, the excerpts above contains gross factual errors; my own fact-check indicates that in the named public rally during the opening of Kagera Airport, there was no summary dismissal of the two officials instantly on television, as alleged. Instead, the two, one District Executive Directors for Bukoba Urban and another for Rural were relieved their duties later through a press release from President’s Office.   This is my prima impressio reading the Economist this

Tundu Lissu, a despot in the shadow?

By Masinde Masondore, Montreal, Canada, 01-04-2018:  WHEN a learned politician brags of publicly embarrassing his President and counts it an honor while deliberately sabotages the nation's economic interests is a misfit in African traditions. 'Africans have had own ways of criticising the King, the way it happened in ancient Israel, however, in any case, the nation's interests were set apart from any sabotage," Gilbert Moshi. Tindu Lissu, a controversial Tanzanian opposition politician would be leaning on a wrong wall. He chose a road less travelled by learned individuals who mostly were rational. The road he walks and the philosophy he exhibit, only label him a tyranny of darkness. Any democratic leader, whether in opposition or ruling party ought to be totally enveloped in wisdom which prevents monumental errors of judgment. Lissu does not exhibit a minute of it. One of the pillars of customer-focused policies in the business world i
