A 2.5 kilometer bridge will colour the SGR over and above some Dar es Salaam streets

In what may be termed as the ‘Magufulification’ effect in infrastructure, the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro has reached more than 42 percent which is well on schedule for the handing over of the first lot in November, 2019.

In May last year, President John Magufuli launched the first construction phase of the SGR from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro. Upon its completion, Tanzania will have a fast and modern passenger train with a speed of 160kph while the freight train will have a top speed of 120kph.

Tanzania signed the agreement with Turkish Yapi Merkez and Portuguese Motor Engil firms to construct the Dar e salaam Morogoro Stretch at Tsh. 2.7 Trillion (Over $ 1.2 billion) which is to be completed by November 1st, this year.

Details from Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) indicate that the main work left is the installation of railway sleepers, viaduct and fibres. A section of 2.5 km over bridge in Dar es Salaam is also in advanced stages. “The SGR is well on schedule and we are ready to deliver it,” says a senior project engineer.

Meanwhile, in March last year, President Magufuli laid the foundation stone for the second construction phase of the SGR from Morogoro region to Makutupora in Dodoma region covering 426 kilometres. This phase stands at Tsh. 4.4 trillion (around $ 2.2 billion) upon completion.

The 522-km-long Dar-Dodoma line is also being constructed by Turkish firms. The SGR will also help ease the flow of goods and people in the neighbouring landlocked countries of Uganda, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and Rwanda.

Upon completion, the railway line will be able to transport 10,000 tonnes of cargo at one time. Tanzania has lost customers at the Dar es Salaam port due to unreliable rail transport but after this project we will be able to recall them.

The railway line will also accelerate economic development in the country and improve international relations.

Facts The Economist Got Them Wrong on Magufuli

DAR ES SALAAM, East Africa:  By Dr. Hernan Louise Verhofstadt* “ A BIT like President Donald Trump, Tanzania’s president, John Magufuli, likes to fire employees on television. In November Mr. Magufuli used a live broadcast from a small town in the north of the country summarily to dismiss two officials,” this is an extract from a recent online article I came across from the newspaper that I admired when I was growing up in Europe back in 1990’s; the Economist . Before I venture into other serious issues, the excerpts above contains gross factual errors; my own fact-check indicates that in the named public rally during the opening of Kagera Airport, there was no summary dismissal of the two officials instantly on television, as alleged. Instead, the two, one District Executive Directors for Bukoba Urban and another for Rural were relieved their duties later through a press release from President’s Office.   This is my prima impressio reading the Economist this

Tundu Lissu, a despot in the shadow?

By Masinde Masondore, Montreal, Canada, 01-04-2018:  WHEN a learned politician brags of publicly embarrassing his President and counts it an honor while deliberately sabotages the nation's economic interests is a misfit in African traditions. 'Africans have had own ways of criticising the King, the way it happened in ancient Israel, however, in any case, the nation's interests were set apart from any sabotage," Gilbert Moshi. Tindu Lissu, a controversial Tanzanian opposition politician would be leaning on a wrong wall. He chose a road less travelled by learned individuals who mostly were rational. The road he walks and the philosophy he exhibit, only label him a tyranny of darkness. Any democratic leader, whether in opposition or ruling party ought to be totally enveloped in wisdom which prevents monumental errors of judgment. Lissu does not exhibit a minute of it. One of the pillars of customer-focused policies in the business world i
