After Suisse Bank, Japan Is Magufuli’s Next Scorecard

Staff Writer, Washington D.C

Developed nations around the world have continued to appreciate the outstanding efforts of President John Magufuli of making Tanzania a middle income country by 2030 by providing financial aid and soft loans to boost the country’s journey.

Yesterday, the Swiss biggest financial institution, credit Suisse Bank (UK branch) pledged to continue supporting strategic investments implemented by the government of President Magufuli in Tanzania after being satisfied with the speed of loan- repayment and quality of projects implemented by the government of Tanzania.

That notwithstanding, last month, the German Chancellor, Angel Merkel phoned the Tanzanian leader to assure her highest level support of his country in various sectors including Tanzania’s industrialisation drive.

Today, one day after the credit Suisse Bank had pledged her support to Tanzania, the government of Japan through its developmental organisation, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has pledged to provide to Tanzania the financial aid and soft loan worth US 345 million dollars (Tsh. 754/-billion) to implement three developmental projects.

The projects to be implemented are the constructions of the Arusha to Holili road (USD 221 million), Kigoma Port (US 25 million grant) and the Zanzibar water and sanitation project (USD 99million).

The JICA’s Vice President for Sub- Saharan Africa, Mr. Hiroshi Kato made the commitment after meeting with the Tanzanian Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Philip Mpango in Washington DC, USA in the margins of annual WB/IMF annual retreat.

Mr. Kato said anytime from now, the funds for the said projects will be disbursed to the government of Tanzania to implement the projects as requested. He added that Japan is proud to have strong long standing friendship with the government of Tanzania and in particular the fifth phase government of President Magufuli.

In another development, Mr Kato has called on the government of Tanzania to submit all its strategic projects it wants to implement to JICA so that they may be supported through financial aids and subsidies or grants.

On his side, Dr. Mpango thanked the government of Japan for its continuing support in various projects in Tanzania. He cited the first Mfugale flyover in the country as one of the best examples of projects implemented and supported financially by the government of Japan.

Dr. Mpango called the government of Japan through JICA to provide financial aid and subsidies to implement some of Tanzania’s strategic projects including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Dodoma International Airport, the Rufiji Hydropower Project, Dodoma ring roads and improvement of Tanzania’s port networks.

Facts The Economist Got Them Wrong on Magufuli

DAR ES SALAAM, East Africa:  By Dr. Hernan Louise Verhofstadt* “ A BIT like President Donald Trump, Tanzania’s president, John Magufuli, likes to fire employees on television. In November Mr. Magufuli used a live broadcast from a small town in the north of the country summarily to dismiss two officials,” this is an extract from a recent online article I came across from the newspaper that I admired when I was growing up in Europe back in 1990’s; the Economist . Before I venture into other serious issues, the excerpts above contains gross factual errors; my own fact-check indicates that in the named public rally during the opening of Kagera Airport, there was no summary dismissal of the two officials instantly on television, as alleged. Instead, the two, one District Executive Directors for Bukoba Urban and another for Rural were relieved their duties later through a press release from President’s Office.   This is my prima impressio reading the Economist this

Tundu Lissu, a despot in the shadow?

By Masinde Masondore, Montreal, Canada, 01-04-2018:  WHEN a learned politician brags of publicly embarrassing his President and counts it an honor while deliberately sabotages the nation's economic interests is a misfit in African traditions. 'Africans have had own ways of criticising the King, the way it happened in ancient Israel, however, in any case, the nation's interests were set apart from any sabotage," Gilbert Moshi. Tindu Lissu, a controversial Tanzanian opposition politician would be leaning on a wrong wall. He chose a road less travelled by learned individuals who mostly were rational. The road he walks and the philosophy he exhibit, only label him a tyranny of darkness. Any democratic leader, whether in opposition or ruling party ought to be totally enveloped in wisdom which prevents monumental errors of judgment. Lissu does not exhibit a minute of it. One of the pillars of customer-focused policies in the business world i
